“I Already Have Life Insurance.” But Do You Know What It Covers?

“I already have life insurance.”
Great.
Now comes the more important question:
What exactly does it do?
Many people know their death-benefit amount but have never read the details of their policy.
They know what their family may receive if they die—but have no idea what may be available if they survive a serious illness or injury.
That distinction could matter enormously.
Suppose tomorrow brings a major heart attack, stroke, cancer diagnosis, debilitating chronic condition or serious qualifying injury.
You survive.
But you can’t work like you did before.
Your income changes.
Your savings start shrinking.
Your family’s expenses continue.
Would your life insurance help?
Policies with Living Benefits may allow eligible policyholders to accelerate a portion of the death benefit during their lifetime after certain qualifying events.
Depending on the policy, protection may include:
Critical Illness
Chronic Illness
Terminal Illness
Critical Injury
But here is where consumers need to pay attention:
Not all Living Benefits are created equal.
Different companies and policies can have different definitions, qualifying conditions, exclusions, rider charges and benefit structures.
For example, Critical Injury should never simply be assumed to be included. Ask specifically whether it is covered and whether the rider carries an additional premium.
Also examine exclusions carefully. Ask how the contract addresses qualifying events arising during pandemics or involving acts of terrorism rather than assuming all policies treat those circumstances the same way.
The goal isn’t simply to own a policy.
The goal is to understand the protection you own.
Pull out your current life insurance policy.
Look at the riders.
Ask questions.
Compare the protection.
Because when a crisis happens, that is the worst time to discover a gap in your coverage.
At Vandj Life, we help individuals and families understand Life Insurance with Living Benefits—protection designed not only for the people you leave behind, but potentially for you while you’re still here.
